To Have and To Hold

Image
"To Have and To Hold " I never truly understood the meaning of this until yesterday after watching a stand up comedy performance by a man named Mark.  What does it mean to have?  Let me give an illustration. Say, you have a phone. It's yours. You bought it because you liked it, its specifications, its functions and the fact that it suit your budget. Perfect.  Say, after some time, that phone developed a scratch. A tiny scratch that could be fixed by a repair, a new pouch or you being extra careful with it. But what do you do instead? You dump it and get a new one.  It still functioned properly, but it got a little dent, it yelled at you a little bit in a fit of anger, and boom! You got a replacement.  What does it mean to hold ?  To stay with it. Knowing that one scratch doesn't take away the purpose, knowing that one yell, one moment of weakness doesn't take away the true essence and character.  This is so in many of our relationships.  Da...

Don't love your job.. Job your love.

Image
" Don't love your job, job your love" This was a phrase that tore the internet to pieces a few months ago.  A lot of people either did not understand the phrase, or simply followed the bandwagon and made a cruise or trend out of it.  Now, it is important to note that in many cases, these podcasters do actually say very many silly things. However, if you listen to what is not being said, if you listen with an understanding heart and not an itch to respond, you just might pick a thing or two.  This is what I understood by that phrase.  "Don't love your job"  This means that you have a job that you do, it is possible that you don't like it and you only do it for necessity because it pays the bills, it probably robs you of your free time, creative spirit or even health, but you do it anyway, and you dedicate yourself to doing something you don't care for, simply because you have to.  DON'T .  HOWEVER,  'job your love'  This means that you s...

I QUIT MY JOB

Image
I QUIT MY JOB.  No, I'm not a quitter. I RESIGNED from my job. I know that probably raises so many questions like, 'who resigns in this economy? Did you have something else to do before you left? Why did you leave? I thought you loved your job.' I will answer these in due time. But yes, I resigned in this economy. Largely because I was NOT fulfilled or accomplished in my previous workplace, it wasn't financially amazing either, but ultimately it was TIME TO GO.  Life is in phases. And just like every other areas of our lives, our career/work is something we do that not only gives us money but a sense of purpose.  The phase that I was; SURVIVAL.  This phase was characterized by doing what I had to, to get by in the moment and to ensure that my needs were met. This meant that I didn't need to like what I was doing, I just had to do it for the 'benefits'. Rent needed to be paid. Bills needed to be sorted. And God provided that.  But you know what He also does...

Seasons

Image
It is important to recognize times and seasons.  Phases and dimensions in your life.  When you know where one stops and another starts, you will understand why you feel dissatisfied by the same things and place that used to excite you.  The people.  The job.  The friends.  The house.  You suddenly begin to feel a disconnect.  You start to feel like there is more that you should be doing, more that you CAN be doing, more that you OUGHT to be doing.  Make no mistakes. Your current phase was the answer to your prayers at a certain time.  But if your plan is to become a medical doctor, you can't expect to be in JSS3 forever.  You need to move up.  So that someone can step into their own better phase, (your current phase).  Some signs will begin to manifest in this season.  You feel uneasy.  You feel the urge to pray.  You feel unfulfilled.  You feel like you've outgrown.  You know why?  Because yo...

Rest Over Urgency

Image
Why are we always in a hurry?  Where are we always rushing to?  Rushing to brush, rushing to wash plates, rushing to bathe, even eating food in a rush, walking very fast... Everything is an emergency. There's always an urgency to what we do.  Thinking we need to make decisions fast.  We need to 'make it' quickly.  We need to this.. We need to that.  Always in a hurry.  I have observed this about myself and here is what i realized.  Survival Mode.  Yes.  My nervous system has been in survival mode for years, and now it is not accustomed to taking things slow.  To enjoying moments. To REST.  It's fear.  Fear that I may not be able to do it again, or do it well. Fear that if I relax, I am not worthy of the results I seek, fear that if I don't do it now, I'll fall into the unknown.  But the Lord hasn't given us a spirit of fear. He said it in 2 Timothy 1:7.  I type too fast.  I rush chores.  I rush to...

I fell down the stairs

Image
I fell down the stairs, right in front of two boys. Oh, the embarrassment. But you know what I did? I got up, with the help of one of them who stretched out his hand, amid sorrys and “are you okay?”s. I was fine. The only thing that probably took a hit was my ego. I brushed it off and kept going. The next day, I saw the same guys again. I climbed the same stairs, and I’ve climbed them every day since. And no, I haven’t fallen again. Now this isn’t to brag about how sturdy my feet became or how kind those guys were. It’s to remind you of how many times you fell and then refused to go back. See, my feet didn’t become sturdier. I still walk and run on those stairs. What changed was this: I discovered exactly what made me trip. It was my slippers. Did I change them? Yes. Did I stop taking the stairs? No. Because you don’t need to stop trying something just because you failed once. You only need to identify what caused the fall, the failure, the dent. And even though people witnessed t...

You are Mentally Exhausted

Image
You are mentally exhausted.  Mental laziness and exhaustion can occur due to trauma, survival mode, and/or 'lack', and can hinder you from learning and growing sustainable skills.  Why?  Because sustainable skills take time to learn, grow and perfect.  And you know what someone in survival mode doesn't have? Time.  You are flying by the seat of your pants.  Probably homeless, and trying to get enough to feed for the week.  Probably do not even own a smartphone to have access to learning these skills.  Probably even depressed from the weight of carrying the burden of their existence on their shoulders.  And do you know what that makes you?  Mentally exhausted.  Because you are used to quick fixes and odd jobs to 'get by', at some point, learning that skill seems like a chore, reading that long article seems unnecessary.  Your nervous system is addicted to fast releases and gratification.  You rely on the little you know, to...
