Rest Over Urgency
Why are we always in a hurry?
Where are we always rushing to?
Rushing to brush, rushing to wash plates, rushing to bathe, even eating food in a rush, walking very fast... Everything is an emergency. There's always an urgency to what we do.
Thinking we need to make decisions fast.
We need to 'make it' quickly.
We need to this.. We need to that.
Always in a hurry.
I have observed this about myself and here is what i realized.
Survival Mode.
Yes.
My nervous system has been in survival mode for years, and now it is not accustomed to taking things slow.
To enjoying moments.
To REST.
It's fear.
Fear that I may not be able to do it again, or do it well. Fear that if I relax, I am not worthy of the results I seek, fear that if I don't do it now, I'll fall into the unknown.
But the Lord hasn't given us a spirit of fear. He said it in 2 Timothy 1:7.
I type too fast.
I rush chores.
I rush to speak.
My nerves are always on edge.
It trickled into my leisure. It made me impatient. I forward movies, I 2x voicenotes.
Social media makes it harder. Reducing our attention span, we are unable to sit through long form content without skipping. Or read long articles like this one.
Lol.
(Many will still skip this. I know I would have before now)
We don't enjoy anymore.
We just do life.
Relax.
What am I doing now?
I am taking it slow.
It's VERY HARD.
But now, rest is not a lazy man's escape.
Rest doesn't just mean lying down for hours.
Rest means trust.
It means knowing that God is capable and you are His child.
It means staying silent for a few minutes when you get home, just focusing on your breathing and God's goodness.
It means taking the time to actually enjoy what you are doing, the intricacies of it.
Rest means to stop jumping at every sound because you must attend to it immediately or you are a failure.
Again, Rest is trust.
Rest is deep breaths before you eat that meal.
Rest is observing your neighborhood while walking home.
Rest is laughing at yourself for making a little mistake without beating yourself up.
Rest is calming down to read that article without seeking a summary first.
Again, Rest is TRUST.
Not just in yourself but in the one that carries you.
Rest is VICTORY.
Henceforth, I will operate from REST and not URGENCY.
